Tools for Developing Reasoning Skills
Reasoning and logic skills develop over time and can be supported by connecting with your child’s interests and challenging them with rich, deep conversations and challenging opportunities that require problem solving.
Reading is one of the the strongest predictors for the development of strong verbal reasoning skills. Encourage your child to read a lot. If your child is not interested in books, provide other types of texts such as comics or magazines. Follow this up by talking about what your child is reading. Engage your child with questions that require them to connect different parts of the text and their personal experience.
Puzzles for Developing Logic & Reasoning Skills (Verbal, Quantitative, & Non-Verbal)
Another excellent way to develop reasoning and logic skills is to work on puzzles and play games. If you can find puzzles just beyond your child’s comfort level and work through the challenges with them they will develop problem solving skills and strategies for approaching and successfully completing more difficult challenges. A variety of different types of puzzles to develop different types of thinking are linked below.
Board Games
Finally, board games are an excellent way to connect and develop problem solving skills. See the link below for descriptions of a variety of different games. There should be at least one that appeals to everyone on this list. In addition, I have included links to some of my favorites board games for both home and school!
