Welcome to Middle School! I hope both students and parents are excited to get back to school. I am rested from the summer and ready to start the new year. I am looking forward to exploring educational opportunities with every student and helping each of them learn and grow. As I excitedly start my 20th year at Sacred Heart, I will be teaching 8th grade English Language Arts and 6th grade Social Studies.
In reading, the 8th graders will continue to explore and expand their repertoire of strategies to assist their reading comprehension. We will explore a variety of novels, short stories, and non-fiction pieces throughout the year in whole group and small group settings. The 8th graders will also be focusing on effectively communicating their ideas through the written and spoken word. Students will have the opportunity to practice their writing everyday while exploring different components of writing. Some areas of writing that we will be looking at include the writing process, narrative, persuasive, expository writing, poetry, and the development of the different parts of a story. Students will also have an opportunity to develop their public speaking skills.
6th grade social studies will be a fun year. We will be focusing on the geography, history, and culture. We will start by gaining the foundations of geography before moving continent to continent to look at regions and civilizations, past and present. Students will also be working with Daily Geography to practice their map skills and use of an atlas.
I have high expectations for all of my students, and I believe that each student will be able to meet those expectations. All of the Middle School teachers will be working together to provide an excellent and well-rounded education for every student. This year we will continue working with PBIS. We will work to help students remember the expectations the first days of school. As we move through the first full week of school, my classroom expectations and procedures will be defined to the students as well. I am looking forward to a great.
