Hello, my name is Jason Spooner and I am Sacred Heart’s band director. My first 18 years here at Sacred Heart have been fabulous, and am looking forward to another successful year of music education in our school. Sacred Heart has a rich tradition of having one of the finest band programs in the state and my hope is that all kids participate and receive the value of a well rounded education.
Some people may know me as the crazy teacher who actually moved to Iowa from Hawaii. Yes, you read that correctly. Seven years and two kids later, it was time to come home to be closer to family since both my wife and I grew up in Iowa. Hawaii was incredible, and I miss it, but Iowa has always been home. I spent four years serving as a United States Marine in the Marine Forces Pacific Band where I was the principal trombone player and band leader of the Jazz Band and Dixieland Band. I was also a combat trained Marine and spent time as a Marksmanship Instructor to other Marines. After leaving the service, my wife and I decided to stay in Hawaii for a few more years. These years were spent teaching 7th and 8th grade concert band and 7th grade life science at Sacred Hearts Academy, which happens to be an all girls’ school. At the time we had the largest all-girl marching band in the country and took them all the way to Disney World from Hawaii. My last week in Hawaii was spent learning how to surf from some of my parents and students. If I would have learned to surf in my first years there I may have never left.
Before Hawaii I began my teaching at Coon Rapids-Bayard in Southwest Iowa. I spent three years as the 5-12 band director. I also coached junior high wrestling and was an assistant high school girl’s softball coach. I graduated from Millikin University, in Decatur, Illinois with a degree in music education.
I hope this letter helps you get to know me a little better, but if we haven't met, please come and visit with me in the band room at school. I look forward to having your kids in the SHS Band!!!
